What is El Niño — And Why India is Getting Hotter

🌊

Simple explanation every Indian needs to know

El Niño is a natural climate pattern where warm water in the Pacific Ocean spreads unusually eastward — changing wind patterns and weather globally. When El Niño is active over South Asia it significantly increases summer temperatures, delays monsoon, reduces rainfall and creates prolonged heatwaves. India is directly in El Niño’s impact zone. The 2026 El Niño cycle is one of the strongest recorded — scientists from IMD (India Meteorological Department) have issued warnings that this summer will see record-breaking temperatures across most of India. This is not just a hot summer — this is a health emergency that every Indian family needs to prepare for RIGHT NOW.

How Extreme Heat Harms Your Body

⚠️

Heat affects every organ — most people do not realise how dangerous it is

Your body works hard to keep its internal temperature at 37°C. When outside temperature exceeds 40°C your cooling mechanisms are overwhelmed. Sweating causes severe water and electrolyte loss. Blood thickens. Heart works harder. Kidneys struggle to filter. Brain starts to overheat. Each of these processes causes direct organ damage when prolonged. Understanding what heat does to your body helps you take the right preventive action before symptoms become serious.

🧠

Brain & Nervous System

Core body temp above 40°C causes confusion, dizziness, fainting and in severe cases seizures. Heat is the brain’s biggest enemy. First sign of heat effect is poor concentration and headache.

❤️

Heart & Circulation

Heat forces heart to pump 2-3x harder to push blood to skin for cooling. For people with existing BP or heart conditions this extra strain can trigger cardiac events even at moderate temperatures.

🫁

Kidneys & Urinary

Dehydration in heat concentrates urine causing kidney stone formation and in severe cases acute kidney injury. India sees a massive spike in kidney stone cases every summer — direct heat effect.

🫀

Blood Thickening

Even mild dehydration causes blood to thicken significantly increasing clotting risk and stroke probability. Doctors in India report increased stroke and heart attack cases during every heatwave.

😴

Sleep & Recovery

Heat disrupts deep sleep — your body cannot cool down adequately at night. Chronic heat-disrupted sleep reduces immunity, increases stress hormones and accelerates all other heat-related damage.

🦷

Skin & Muscles

Extreme sweating depletes sodium causing painful muscle cramps. Skin develops heat rash, sunburn and in severe cases heat blisters. Outdoor workers face the highest skin and muscle risk.

03

Complete Hydration Guide — How Much, When and What

💧

WHO Hydration Recommendation for Extreme Heat

WHO recommends adults in extreme heat conditions drink 3-4 litres of water per day — significantly more than the normal 2 litre recommendation. Do not wait until thirsty — by the time you feel thirst you are already mildly dehydrated. Carry water everywhere during summer.

How to Protect Yourself at Home

🏠

Simple home measures can reduce your heat exposure by 60-70%

Most Indian families do not have AC — and that is completely fine. These simple, affordable home measures can keep your indoor temperature 4-8°C cooler than outdoor even without any air conditioning. Follow all of them together for maximum effect this summer.

Cross ventilate — not just open windows — Open windows on opposite sides of the house. This creates airflow that is far more cooling than opening just one side

Wet jute/cotton curtains before sleep — Hanging wet curtains at windows acts as a natural evaporative cooler reducing room temperature by 3-5°C instantly without electricity

Close all windows from 10 AM to 5 PM — Counterintuitively keeping windows closed traps cool morning air inside rather than letting hot afternoon air enter

Wear loose cotton clothing only — Synthetic fabrics trap heat against skin. Loose white or light cotton allows maximum airflow and reflects sunlight reducing heat absorption

Avoid cooking heavy meals during peak heat 11 AM–4 PM — Cooking generates enormous heat indoors. Cook early morning or evening to keep your home cooler during the hottest hours

Sleep on the lowest floor possible — Heat rises. The ground floor or basement is always significantly cooler than upper floors during summer nights in India

Wet your hair and scalp before sleep — Evaporation from wet hair cools your core temperature significantly helping you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply in heat

Never go out between 11 AM and 4 PM — Peak UV and heat during these hours. If unavoidable — hat, umbrella, full sleeve cotton shirt and carry water at all times

07

Special Care — Babies & Elderly

👶 Newborns & Children

  • Babies cannot sweat efficiently — they overheat 5x faster than adults in same conditions
  • Never leave baby in parked car — temperatures can reach 60°C in minutes even in shade
  • Check baby’s urine — dark yellow means dangerous dehydration — feed breastmilk or water immediately
  • Dress baby in single layer loose cotton only — no synthetic or double layering ever
  • Keep baby on cool floor or mat during peak heat hours — coolest place in house
  • Lukewarm (not cold) water sponge bath cools baby safely — cold water causes shock in babies
  • Watch for warning signs: no tears when crying, sunken fontanelle (soft spot), very dry mouth
  • Rush to hospital if baby’s body feels extremely hot without sweating — critical emergency

👴 Elderly & Patients

  • Elderly lose ability to sense thirst — must drink scheduled water every hour even without feeling thirsty
  • Blood pressure medicines can impair sweating — BP patients need extra monitoring in heat
  • Diabetes patients have impaired circulation — feet and extremities overheat and damage faster
  • Heart patients should completely avoid outdoor activity during peak heat 11 AM–4 PM
  • Check on elderly neighbours and relatives living alone daily during heatwaves — this saves lives
  • Never give alcohol to elderly to “cool down” — it causes dangerous dehydration
  • Keep emergency numbers ready — know nearest hospital location before a crisis occurs
08

Plant Trees — The Real Long-Term Solution

🌳 Plant More Trees — Cool India Naturally

Every tree planted today fights the heat crisis of tomorrow. Urban heat islands in Indian cities are getting worse every year because we cut more trees than we plant. A single mature tree cools surrounding air by 2-8°C and provides the cooling equivalent of 10 room-sized air conditioners working 20 hours a day — at zero electricity cost and zero carbon emissions.

🌳

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Grows fast in Indian climate. Provides dense cooling shade. Air purifying. Anti-insect natural properties. Traditional Indian cooling tree that every home should have.

Fast Growing
🌿

Peepal (Sacred Fig)

Produces oxygen 24 hours a day — including night unlike most trees. Extraordinary cooling effect. Dense canopy reduces street temperature by up to 8°C.

24hr Oxygen
🍃

Banyan Tree

Largest cooling canopy of any Indian tree. A mature banyan can provide shade and cooling for an area of 200+ square metres benefiting an entire neighbourhood simultaneously.

Maximum Shade
🌴

Coconut Palm

Perfect for coastal and South Indian planting. Provides shade, nutrition and natural building material. The entire tree is useful — nothing wasted.

Multipurpose
🍀

Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Plant in pots inside every Indian home. Purifies indoor air, produces oxygen and repels mosquitoes — the complete indoor plant for Indian summers and beyond.

Indoor + Medicinal
🌱

Moringa (Drumstick)

Fastest growing edible tree for Indian climate. Provides shade AND extraordinary nutrition. Leaves are a superfood. Plant in backyard for cooling plus year-round nutrition.

Edible Superfood

🌱 SwastFit’s Pledge to Every Reader: If every person reading this article plants just ONE tree this summer — and tells 5 people to do the same — we can collectively reduce the temperature of our neighbourhoods meaningfully. Trees are not just for future generations. A tree planted today can provide measurable cooling within 3-5 years. Plant one tree. Encourage one neighbour. Make it a family tradition this summer of 2026.

09

Heatstroke — Warning Signs & First Aid

🚨

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency — every Indian must know this!

Heatstroke occurs when body temperature exceeds 40°C and the body’s cooling system fails completely. Without immediate treatment organ damage begins within minutes and death can occur within hours. Knowing the difference between heat exhaustion (serious) and heatstroke (life-threatening) saves lives.

Body temp above 40°C without sweating — Hot dry skin with no sweating is the most dangerous heatstroke sign. Sweating stops when cooling system fails

Confusion or unusual behaviour — Sudden confusion, slurred speech or strange behaviour in heat is a brain temperature emergency — call ambulance immediately

Unconsciousness or collapse — Person collapses in heat — this is a medical emergency — do not wait for them to “wake up” — call 108 immediately

Rapid pounding heartbeat — Heart racing above 120 beats per minute with high body temperature means severe cardiovascular heat stress

No urination for 8+ hours — Severe dehydration causing kidney shutdown — get to hospital immediately with IV fluids required

Nausea with extreme weakness — Progressing to heatstroke — move to cool place and call for help immediately without delay

🩺 Heatstroke First Aid — Do This Immediately

1

Move to Cool Place

Get person indoors under shade or fan immediately. Every minute in heat worsens damage.

2

Remove Clothing

Remove all excess clothing. Loosen everything that traps heat around neck and chest.

3

Cool Body Fast

Wet cloth on neck, armpits and groin. Sponge with cool (not ice cold) water. Fan vigorously.

4

Call 108 Immediately

Do not wait to see if they improve. Heatstroke needs hospital IV treatment. Call ambulance now.

10

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should I drink in this El Niño summer?
+

WHO recommends 3-4 litres daily during extreme heat — more if you work outdoors or exercise. Do not rely on thirst alone — thirst signals are delayed and by the time you feel thirsty you are already mildly dehydrated. Practical tip: drink one glass of water every hour from 7 AM to 7 PM — this gives you 12 glasses without needing to think about it. Add electrolytes through chaas, coconut water or shikanji rather than just plain water alone.

What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke?
+

Heat exhaustion is serious but the body is still trying to cool itself — person is sweating heavily, feels weak, nauseated and dizzy but is still conscious and sweating. Move them to cool area, give water and electrolytes. Heatstroke is life-threatening — the body’s cooling system has FAILED. Person stops sweating, skin becomes hot and dry, they become confused or unconscious. Call 108 immediately for heatstroke — it cannot be managed at home and requires IV fluids in hospital.

Should I drink cold water or room temperature water in summer?
+

Room temperature or slightly cool water is actually better for hydration than ice cold water. Ice cold water causes blood vessels to constrict temporarily reducing the rate at which water is absorbed. It can also cause stomach cramping if drunk rapidly when overheated. Traditionally Indian homes used matka (clay pot) water which is naturally cool at an ideal drinking temperature — this traditional practice is scientifically validated as the optimal temperature for heat hydration.

Is AC bad for health in extreme heat?
+

AC itself is not bad — sudden extreme temperature change is the problem. Going from 48°C outdoor to 18°C AC room repeatedly causes thermal shock to your respiratory and cardiovascular system. WHO recommends AC settings between 24-26°C — not extreme cold. Never sleep with AC on all night if you have respiratory conditions. If you don’t have AC use fans with wet cloths — this natural evaporative cooling is highly effective and has zero thermal shock risk.

A Message from Tofikuddin Ahmed — SwastFit Founder

This is going to be the most intense summer in India in recent memory. El Niño is not a distant weather event — it is already here, already affecting temperatures in your city right now. As a pharmacy student I know exactly how heat affects the human body at the cellular level — and I can tell you that the damage from prolonged heat exposure accumulates silently before any symptoms appear.

I wrote this article because I genuinely want every Indian family to be prepared — not just to survive this summer but to help their neighbours, their elderly relatives and their children do the same. The home remedies in this guide are not just traditional wisdom — each one is supported by the science I study every day in pharmacy college.

And the tree planting section is closest to my heart. We are living with the consequences of decades of deforestation. Every tree we plant now is a gift to our own future summers. Please plant one tree this season — it is the most powerful health intervention any of us can make beyond our own homes.

Stay cool. Stay safe. Take care of your family. And if you find this article helpful — share it with everyone you care about this summer.

SwastFit.com

who.int/health-topics/heatwaves
