A Message from Tofikuddin Ahmed — SwastFit Founder

India’s air quality is in very bad condition right now — especially in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Patna. As a pharmacy student I have studied how pollution affects our lungs, heart and brain deeply. The most vulnerable are our newborn babies — their lungs are still developing and pollution can cause permanent damage. Take care of your family and your health to stay happy and healthy. Read everything below carefully — each point will be helpful for you and your family!

🌍

WHO & Lancet Research — The Reality of India’s Air

According to the 2025 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, PM2.5 air pollution caused over 17 lakh deaths in India in 2022 alone. WHO states that 99% of the world’s population breathes air that exceeds safe limits. India has 9 of the world’s top 10 most polluted cities — making air pollution one of India’s biggest health crises right now.

How Pollution Damages Your Body — The Science

⚠️

PM2.5 — The Invisible Killer in Indian Air

PM2.5 are microscopic particles 30 times smaller than human hair. When you breathe them in they enter your lungs directly and pass into your bloodstream. Once in blood they travel to your heart, brain and every organ. This causes chronic inflammation, arterial damage and cell death over time — silently and without any immediate symptoms that you can feel.

🫁

Lungs Damaged First

Pollution causes chronic bronchitis, asthma, COPD and even lung cancer over time. Lungs have no pain receptors — damage happens silently for years before you notice.

Most Affected
❤️

Heart Disease Rises

PM2.5 enters bloodstream and causes arterial inflammation increasing risk of heart attack and stroke. WHO links air pollution to 25% of all heart disease deaths globally.

25% of Deaths
🧠

Brain Function Declines

Studies show children growing up in polluted areas have 5-8 IQ points lower than those in clean air areas. Adults face higher dementia and depression risk with long-term exposure.

Research Proven
👁️

Eye Irritation and Damage

Pollutants like NO2 and ozone cause chronic eye irritation, redness and in severe cases permanent corneal damage. Wear protective glasses outdoors on high AQI days.

Eye Health
🦷

Skin and Hair Damage

Air pollutants settle on skin causing premature aging, acne and hair thinning. Regular face washing and covering skin outdoors reduces damage significantly over time.

Skin Health
🫀

Blood Pressure Rises

PM2.5 exposure directly raises blood pressure by triggering the body’s stress response. People in high-pollution areas have significantly higher rates of hypertension than clean air areas.

03

Special Warning — Newborn Babies and Children!

👶

Newborn babies are 10 times more vulnerable to air pollution than adults!

A newborn baby’s lungs are still developing for the first 3 years of life. Their immune system is not fully formed. They breathe faster than adults taking in more pollutants per body weight. Pollution exposure in the first 1000 days of life causes permanent lung damage, developmental delays, lower immunity and higher risk of lifelong asthma. Protect your baby FIRST!

🏠

Keep Baby Indoors on High AQI Days

On days when AQI is above 100 keep your baby completely indoors. Do not take them outside even briefly when air quality is poor.

🌿

Keep Indoor Plants in Baby’s Room

NASA-studied indoor plants like money plant and spider plant purify indoor air naturally. Place 2-3 plants in your baby’s room always.

🍼

Breastfeed for Longer

Breast milk provides antibodies that help protect baby against pollution-related respiratory infections and inflammation more effectively than formula.

🌬️

Ventilate Home Carefully

Open windows only in early morning when AQI is lowest. Keep windows closed during afternoon when pollution peaks in most Indian cities daily.

🚫

No Smoking Indoors — Ever!

Secondhand smoke combined with outdoor pollution creates a deadly toxic mix for babies. Strictly no smoking inside or near your home if there is a baby.

🩺

Regular Pediatric Check-ups

Children in polluted cities need regular lung function and developmental checks. Early detection of pollution-related health issues makes treatment much more effective.

04

Which Mask to Wear — Complete Guide

Not All Masks Protect Against Pollution!

Most Indians wear surgical masks thinking they are protected — but surgical masks do NOT filter PM2.5!

😷

N95 Mask

Filters 95% of PM2.5 particles. Best protection for daily outdoor use in polluted Indian cities. Must fit tightly with no gaps. Replace every 2-3 days.

Best Choice
🔵

KN95 Mask

Chinese equivalent of N95. Filters 95% particles. Good alternative if N95 not available. Available at most Indian medical shops for ₹20-50.

Excellent
😷

N99 Mask

Filters 99% of PM2.5. Best for severe pollution days and people with asthma or lung conditions. Slightly more expensive but worth it completely.

Maximum Protection
🧣

Cloth Mask

Only filters large particles. Does NOT protect against PM2.5 at all. Better than nothing but never rely on cloth mask for pollution protection.

Very Limited
💙

Surgical Mask

Designed for bacteria NOT particles. Provides almost zero protection against air pollution PM2.5. Most Indians wear this thinking it helps — it does not.

Not Effective
👶

Children’s N95

Regular adult N95 does not fit children properly leaving gaps. Buy child-sized N95 masks for kids above 3 years. Under 3 years — keep them indoors.

Best Foods to Protect Lungs from Pollution

✓ Eat These Daily

These foods build your body’s defence against air pollution

🫒
Antioxidant

Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Highest Vitamin C content of any Indian food. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals caused by pollution and strengthens lung tissue against particulate damage.

🧄
Anti-inflammatory

Garlic and Ginger

Both have powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that reduce lung inflammation caused by pollution exposure. Have daily in cooking or as tea with honey.

💛
Curcumin

Haldi (Turmeric)

Curcumin in turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Studies show it protects lung cells from PM2.5 damage. Add to milk, dal and vegetables daily.

🍵
Detox

Green Tea and Tulsi Tea

Rich in catechins and antioxidants that help detoxify pollutants from the body. Drink 2-3 cups daily without sugar. Tulsi tea specifically helps respiratory health.

07

Foods That Make Pollution Damage Worse

✗ Avoid These

These foods increase your body’s vulnerability to pollution

🍟
Avoid

Fried and Processed Foods

Trans fats increase inflammation in lungs and airways making them more susceptible to pollution damage. On high AQI days avoid all fried foods completely.

🥤
Avoid

Cold Drinks and Sugary Foods

Sugar causes systemic inflammation that worsens the body’s response to pollution. People with high sugar diets show worse lung function in polluted environments.

🍺
Strictly Avoid

Alcohol

Alcohol weakens immune system and reduces body’s ability to fight pollution-caused oxidative stress. Even moderate alcohol worsens respiratory damage from pollution significantly.

🚬
Never

Smoking — Doubles the Damage

Smoking combined with outdoor air pollution creates catastrophic lung damage. A smoker in Delhi has the same lung damage as a non-smoker breathing for 3 lifetimes. Quit immediately.

🥩
Limit

Red Meat

High saturated fat diet increases systemic inflammation making your body less capable of fighting pollution damage effectively. Prefer plant proteins on high pollution days.

🧂
Limit

Excess Salt

High sodium increases fluid retention in lungs and airways making breathing harder in polluted conditions. Reduce salt especially on high AQI days in your city.

08

Daily Habits That Save Your Lungs from Pollution

💡

These habits combined can reduce your pollution exposure by 60-70%

You cannot control the outdoor air but you can control how much pollution enters your body every day. These daily habits when done consistently make a dramatic difference to your long-term lung health even in heavily polluted Indian cities.

Check AQI every morning — Download AQI India app. Check before going outside. Plan your day around air quality levels in your city

Always wear N95 outdoors — Make N95 mask a daily habit like brushing teeth. Never go outside without it in any Indian city with AQI above 100

Exercise indoors on bad AQI days — Outdoor exercise on high AQI days increases pollution intake 5-10x because breathing rate rises. Use indoor yoga or home workout instead

Ventilate home in early morning only — Open windows from 5-7 AM when AQI is typically lowest. Close windows by 9 AM before traffic pollution peaks in cities

Wash face and hands after outdoor exposure — Pollutants settle on skin and hands. Wash thoroughly after coming home from outside every single day without fail

Use exhaust fan while cooking — Cooking on gas stoves releases high levels of NO2 and particulate matter indoors. Always use exhaust fan or open kitchen window while cooking

Keep indoor plants in every room — Place at least 1-2 NASA-approved air-purifying plants in every room especially bedroom and baby’s room

Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily — Water helps kidneys flush pollution-related toxins from your bloodstream. Staying hydrated supports your body’s natural detox processes

Practice pranayama breathing daily — Deep breathing exercises strengthen lung capacity and help clear pollution particles from respiratory tract. Do 10 minutes every morning

Avoid burning garbage or wood indoors — Indoor burning creates pollution levels 10-50x worse than outdoor air. Never burn anything inside or near home with children present

09

Warning Signs — See Doctor Immediately!

🚨

Do not ignore these pollution-related symptoms!

If you or your family member — especially a child or elderly person — experiences any of these symptoms on high AQI days or after prolonged outdoor exposure, see a doctor immediately without waiting or delaying.

Persistent cough lasting more than 2 weeks — especially with phlegm or blood — needs immediate medical evaluation

Shortness of breath at rest — difficulty breathing while sitting or doing light activity is a serious lung warning sign

Chest tightness or pain — any chest discomfort on high AQI days needs immediate doctor consultation without delay

Baby breathing rapidly — if newborn or infant is breathing unusually fast or with difficulty on polluted days seek emergency care

Severe eye pain or vision changes — sudden eye pain with redness on high pollution days needs ophthalmologist visit urgently

Confusion or severe headache — carbon monoxide exposure from traffic or cooking can cause confusion and severe headache — emergency!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can air purifiers really help in Indian homes?
+

Yes! Air purifiers with HEPA filters effectively remove 99.97% of PM2.5 particles indoors. For a standard Indian room of 150-200 sq ft look for purifiers rated at least 300 CADR. Good options are available between ₹5000-15000. For most people a combination of indoor plants and good ventilation habits is more affordable and sufficient for reducing indoor pollution significantly.

How many plants do I need to purify one room?
+

NASA research suggests approximately 1 medium-sized plant per 10 square meters of floor space for meaningful air purification. For a typical Indian bedroom of 100-150 sq ft you need 1-2 medium plants. More plants always provide better results. Money plant and snake plant are the easiest to maintain and most effective for Indian homes and climate conditions.

Is morning or evening better for outdoor exercise in Indian cities?
+

Early morning between 5-7 AM is generally the best time for outdoor exercise in Indian cities as traffic pollution is lowest. However always check the AQI app first before going out. Avoid 8 AM-8 PM window when traffic and industrial activity peaks in most Indian cities. Evening pollution is generally worse than morning in most Indian urban areas due to accumulated daytime emissions.

Can children wear adult N95 masks?
+

No! Adult N95 masks do not fit children properly leaving large gaps around cheeks and nose that allow polluted air in directly. Buy child-sized N95 or KN95 masks specifically designed for children’s smaller faces. For children under 3 years old masks are not recommended as they can cause breathing difficulty — instead keep very young children completely indoors on high AQI days always.

Does indoor pollution also affect health?
+

Absolutely yes! WHO states that indoor air pollution from cooking on gas stoves, burning incense, cleaning products and poor ventilation can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. In Indian homes cooking on gas stoves releases high levels of NO2 and PM2.5 in the kitchen. Always use exhaust fans, cook near open windows and keep indoor plants in every room for better indoor air quality daily.

Take Care of Your Family — Start Today!

You cannot control what the government does about pollution tomorrow. But you can control what you do at home today. Wear your N95 mask. Place indoor plants in every room. Feed your family anti-pollution foods. Check AQI before going out. These simple habits done consistently will protect your lungs and your family’s health for life!
